GIS Day Training Series
Introduction to the [climateJustice] Map Portal
The Introduction to the climateJustice Map Portal Training Series has been funded by the College-Wide Research Vision -CRV- Initiative of the
City College of New York -CCNY
. The training series consists of four labs, which are organized sequentially to provide readers with
increasing new challenges and opportunities to learn about both, the back-end data
organization and the front-end application design.
The training series booklet is available for download here and it can also
be requested
by email from professor Graziosi at ggraziosi@ccny.cuny.edu. The resources accessible through this page have been developed for educational purposes.
For example, the heatmap shown below has been prepared as part of the training series being offered by the CRV Initiative. It shows the concentration and general distribution of air toxic facilities that were permitted to release pollutants into the environment of New York City in 2023. It also shows the census tracks that have been designated as Disadvantaged Communities (DACs) by the New York State.
Users can zoom in and out and also pan around the map. They can also click to select from either the Toxic Release Inventory Facities (TRI) layer, or from the New York State Disadvantaged Communities (DACs) census tract layer, to bring up tables containing information about a single TRI facility or a specific DACs tract, respectively. The TRI facility information was obtained from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The DACs layer, which contains indicators' percentile values by census tract, was obtained from the
New York’s Climate Justice Working Group (“CJWG”) -an advisory working group charged with developing DAC criteria by the New York Climate Leadership and
Community Protection Act (CLCPA).
