The College-Wide Research Vision (CRV) Initiative of the Office of Research of the City College of New York (CCNY) sponsored a full day of activities to celebrate GIS Day during Geography Week on Friday, November 17, 2023.

A total of 25 participants met at the Spitzer School of Architecture (SSA) to participate in this event. The CRV issued an university-wide call for interested individuals to apply to the CRV Training Program GIS Day event.  More than sixty applications were received from across the university. Unfortunately, because of room capacity and space limitations, we could only admit 32% of the applicants.  Fortunately, as a result of an interdisciplinary search, the participants came from different schools and departments and also from a variety of areas of research and study.

The full day of activities started with breakfast and registrations; and soon after the participants had filled the computer lab inside the SSA library to hear presentations from the CRV team and Ms. Alana Pogostin from Esri New York.  Her presentation titled Location Intelligence and the Science of Where was focused on Esri’s work, support, and solutions across the many different governmental  departments in New York City.

After lunch, we finished the Introduction to the climateJustice Map Portal lab training series which consists of four separate labs leading to the production of webmaps, mobile apps, and story maps.  By the end of the day, students had produced a variety of geospatial apps covering a wide range of topics including from coral reefs bleaching in south Florida to housing and flooding risk analysis, as well as Toxic Release Inventory facilities and the Disadvantaged Communities (DACs) of New York City.
